With years of hard training and great coaching, she progressed to the point where she became the Danish National Champion and record holder in the 50 and 100 Meter Freestyle on multiple occasions. Her performance on the Danish National team led to her being recruited to swim in the United States for Indian River Community College and Florida State University on full scholarship while also representing the Danish National Team. While at Indian River, Kirsten was named Female Swimmer of the Year for NJCAA and while at Florida State, she was Team Captain and recipient of the No Pain No Gain award.
